Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched superbly for eight innings, carrying the visiting Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

Matsuzaka (5-2) turned in one of his best efforts of a roller-coaster season, allowing no runs and four hits while striking out five and walking two in the opener of a four-game series.

Marco Scutaro collected a career-high three doubles and scored two runs and Victor Martinez had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Red Sox in his first game in Cleveland since the Indians traded him to Boston at last year's trade deadline.

Indians starter Fausto Carmona (4-5) labored with his control throughout, allowing three runs on five hits in six-plus innings. He fanned two and issued six walks in losing his fourth consecutive start.

Austin Kearns broke up the shutout with a leadoff homer in the ninth off Boston’s Daniel Bard, who finished up with closer Jonathan Papelbon going on the bereavement list Monday.

Otherwise, Cleveland mustered little offensively as it kicked off a 10-game homestand. The Indians are tied with Milwaukee for the fewest home wins (8) in the major leagues.
