Robinson Cano’s grand slam in the seventh inning in his first ever game batting cleanup gave the New York Yankees an 8-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday.

With Alex Rodriguez getting the night off, Cano went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs from the fourth spot. It was the third grand slam of his career and gave him a team-high 34 RBIs this season.

That was plenty of support for Phil Hughes (6-1), who allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight in seven innings as he got back on track following a pair of sub-par outings.

Russell Branyan hit his fifth homer in the seventh off Hughes, but otherwise the Indians could muster little offense. The top three hitters in the lineup were a combined 0-for-11.

Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona (4-3) was dealt the loss, although reliever Tony Sipp allowed the most damage.

Sipp relieved Carmona to start the seventh and faced five batters, but didn’t retire any of them, including surrendering Cano’s slam.
