Yovani Gallardo threw five shutout innings for his first victory of the season and three players hit home runs for the Milwaukee Brewers in an 8-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
Ryan Braun and Rickie Weeks went deep off Pirates starter Zach Duke (2-1) and Jody Gerut added a homer in the sixth inning for Milwaukee.
Gallardo (1-2) allowed just three hits and three walks while fanning 10 batters.
The big inning for the Brewers came in the fifth. Already with a two-run lead, Weeks knocked a low pitch into the left field stands to give the Brewers a 4-0 advantage. After Carlos Gomez’s long double to centerfield and Braun and Prince Fielder reached on walks, Casey McGehee drove in the Brewers’ third run of the inning on a softly hit ball in front of the plate for an RBI groundout.
The Brewers scored their final run in the ninth inning off Jack Taschner when McGehee extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an opposite-field double to right then scored on Corey Hart’s double to left.
