Marlins 1, Rays 0: Henderson Alvarez pitched his third shutout of the season to outduel Chris Archer as Miami handed visiting Tampa Bay its eighth consecutive defeat.

Alvarez (3-3) scattered eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five while throwing only 88 pitches to extend his scoreless streak to 21 innings. Garrett Jones, Adeiny Hechavarria and Alvarez singled before Christian Yelich walked to force in the game’s only run in the fifth inning as the Marlins improved to 5-0 in interleague play.

James Loney and Yunel Escobar recorded two hits apiece while Kevin Kiermaier had a triple for Tampa Bay, which finished its worst road trip in franchise history at 0-8. Archer (3-3) took the hard-luck loss while yielding one run on five hits and striking out eight over seven innings to end the first half of a four-game, home-and-home series.

The Rays registered six hits in the first five innings, including singles by Evan Longoria and Loney to lead off the second, but Alvarez worked out of every jam. Alvarez helped himself with a two-out base hit to load the bases in the fifth and Yelich worked back from an 0-2 hole for a walk and a 1-0 lead.

Escobar, who made a diving grab to start a double play in the bottom of the seventh, singled to lead off the eighth for the Rays before Jose Molina bunted into a double play. Alvarez, who came in 0-5 with a 6.28 ERA against the Rays, retired them 1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth career shutout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay RF Wil Myers, the 2013 American League Rookie of the Year, was diagnosed with a slight stress fracture in his right wrist and will be in a cast for 5-6 weeks. … Alvarez, who blanked the Seattle Mariners earlier this season, has three straight shutouts in interleague play. … The previous worst road trip in franchise history for the Rays was July 14-20, 2006, when they went 0-7 in series at Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels.
