Mariners 5, Rays 0: Endy Chavez singled in the go-ahead run with two outs as visiting Seattle scored five times in the ninth inning to hand Tampa Bay its 12th loss in 13 games.

Brad Miller tripled with two outs and no one on off Grant Balfour (0-2) before Chavez slapped a 0-2 pitch into left field for the contest’s first run as the Mariners won for the seventh time in eight games. James Jones followed by lining a shot over right fielder Kevin Kiermaier’s head for a two-run triple and Kyle Seager knocked in two more with a double two batters later.

Seattle starter Felix Hernandez struck a career-high 15 batters and allowed only four hits over seven innings before settling for a no-decision. Cole Gillespie, Chavez and Jones finished with two hits each and Yoervis Medina (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the victory.

The Rays got a runner to second base in three of the first four innings, but Hernandez would not allow anyone to third or beyond. The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and came up empty after a fielder’s choice and Robinson Cano’s drive that Matt Joyce reached up to catch just in front of the left-field wall.

Tampa Bay starter Chris Archer shut out the Mariners on five hits over 6 1/3 innings before Jake McGee retired two batters with a runner at second in the seventh. David DeJesus had a double for Tampa Bay’s only extra-base hit and Dominic Leone and Charlie Furbush combined to pitch the ninth to finish Seattle’s fourth shutout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hernandez has struck out at least 10 in a game 29 times, passing Mark Langston (28) for second on the franchise’s all-time list behind only Randy Johnson (94). … Seattle OF Michael Saunders missed his second straight game with a sore right shoulder, but could return in the next couple of days after an examination showed no structural damage. … Archer is only 1-1 in his last five starts despite a 0.87 ERA.
