BALTIMORE -- Chris Sale struck out 12 in 7 2/3 shutout innings and Melky Cabrera and Adam LaRoche both contributed RBI doubles in the sixth inning as the Chicago White Sox posted a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.
The doubleheader is the makeup for games postponed April 27 and 28 because of rioting and unrest in Baltimore. The third game of that series was played in a closed Oriole Park on April 29 and the Orioles claimed an 8-2 victory.
Baltimore (21-24) has been struggling at the plate recently, and going against Sale didn't make things any easier. He struck out the side in the first inning and five in a row through the fifth and sixth innings.
Overall, the left-hander gave up just four singles and had 85 strikes among a season-high 120 pitches. Sale (4-2) had pitched eight innings in each of his previous three starts, and this was the third time he struck out at least 10 in a game.
Left-hander Zach Duke came on for Sale in the eighth and struck out third baseman Manny Machado on a checked-swing call. Machado slammed his bat into the ground and home plate umpire Toby Basner quickly ejected him.
Duke struck out two batters in the ninth but gave up a two-run homer to first baseman Chris Davis. Right-hander Jake Petricka came on to strike out pinch-hitter Travis Snider and post his first save.
The Orioles struck out 16 times in this game.
Sale battled rookie right-hander Tyler Wilson, making his first major league start. Both pitched well early, and the teams were locked in a scoreless tie after five innings.
But the White Sox (21-24) broke through against Wilson in the top of the sixth. Center fielder Adam Eaton led off with a walk and scored when Cabrera followed with a double to the left-field corner.
LaRoche made it 2-0 two batters later when he drove in Cabrera with a double to deep center. Wilson (0-1) gave up two runs and five hits in a strong six-inning start, but he couldn't match Sale.
The Orioles' best threat against Sale came in the seventh when they put runners on first and second with two outs. Shortstop J.J. Hardy then ended the inning when he popped out on the first pitch.
Chicago added a run in the ninth when catcher Tyler Flowers grounded into a forceout against right-hander Tommy Hunter.
NOTES: LHP Brian Matusz's appeal of his eight-game suspension is set to be heard June 3. He was tossed from Saturday's game versus the Marlins for having a foreign substance on his arm and then suspended. He can pitch until the decision on the appeal comes down. ... RHP Tyler Wilson, who started Game 1, served as the 26th player on the Orioles' roster for the doubleheader. MLB permits one additional player per roster for doubleheaders. ... RHP Daniel Webb served in that same role for the White Sox. Chicago recalled him from Triple-A Charlotte earlier Thursday. ... The makeup doubleheader forced the White Sox to do some traveling on an already busy road trip. They will be playing 11 games in 11 days in four cities.
