Justin Turner hit a go-ahead home run to lead off the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 3-2 victory Friday in a National League West showdown series with the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.
The victory moved the Dodgers a game behind the Diamondbacks in the division after falling two games back following a defeat against Arizona on Thursday. The Dodgers moved into second place in the NL West, ahead of the Colorado Rockies, who lost at San Diego.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo elected to keep starter Zack Greinke in the game instead of replacing him with a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth inning. Greinke had just given up a pinch-hit home run to Enrique Hernandez in the bottom of the seventh inning, which tied the game 2-2.
After Turner's home run, Greinke struck out Manny Machado and was replaced by left-hander Jake Diekman. Greinke (13-9) gave up three runs on six hits over 7 1/3 innings with a walk and five strikeouts.
Struggling Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 33rd save. He had given up a run in each of his previous four outings after spending 10 days on the disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat. Dylan Floro (5-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the victory.
Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu gave up a two-run home run in the first inning to Paul Goldschmidt but settled down to pitch seven strong innings. Ryu gave up two hits to his first three batters but just two more the rest of the way. He struck out five and did not allow a walk.
With Steven Souza Jr. on base in the first inning, Goldschmidt hit a home run inside the right field foul pole, his 31st of the season. It extended his club record for consecutive road games reaching base to 43.
Since Goldschmidt's road on-base streak began on May 27, he has hit 15 home runs in those contests.
The Dodgers cut the Arizona lead to 2-1 with an RBI single from Joc Pederson in the third inning. Hernandez's home run in the seventh inning came as a pinch hitter for Ryu. Hernandez has 19 home runs on the season, two while pinch-hitting.
Turner hit his 11th home run, connecting on the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning. Since being reinstated from the disabled list on Aug. 2, Turner has reached base in 23 of 24 games and is batting .402 (39-for-97) in that stretch with six home runs.
The Diamondbacks lead the season series 9-5.
