Justin Smoak hit a two-run home run, starter Aaron Sanchez pitched five runless innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Saturday.

Sanchez (1-0) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six in five-plus innings.

Ken Giles pitched around a ninth-inning single to earn his first save of the season.

The Blue Jays have won two in a row after the Tigers won on Opening Day on Thursday. All three games have been shutouts.

Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull (0-1) allowed four hits, two walks and three runs with five strikeouts in five innings.

The Tigers had runners on base in each of the first three innings but did not score.

Miguel Cabrera singled in the first inning, his first hit against Sanchez in his 15th career at-bat against him. Cabrera also singled in the third to pass Luis Aparicio and move into second place among Venezuelan-born players with 2,678 hits.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the fourth inning.

Brandon Drury led off with a double and scored on a single to right by Billy McKinney, who was out trying for a double.

Teoscar Hernandez walked and Smoak followed with the Blue Jays' first home run of the season, a drive to left.

Sanchez was replaced by Tim Mayza in the sixth when he hit the first batter of the inning, Cabrera. Mikie Mahtook ran for Cabrera, who had a contusion on his hand. X-rays were negative.

Mayza walked Niko Goodrum with one out. Christin Stewart grounded out to first, moving the runners to second and third. Daniel Hudson replaced Mayza and struck out Grayson Greiner to end the inning.

Daniel Norris replaced Turnbull and pitched around a walk in the sixth.

Joe Biagini replaced Hudson after Josh Harrison's two-out single in the seventh and completed the inning with a strikeout.

Norris overcame a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Biagini returned to pitch the top of the eighth and had a perfect inning.

Victor Alcantara replaced Norris in the bottom eighth after a walk and a single. Alcantara hit Randal Grichuk with a pitch to load the bases, but the right-hander retired the final two batters.
