Joevan Catron scored a game-high 20 points as Oregon pulled away from stubborn Denver for a 68-56 victory in the BTI Invitational at Eugene, Ore., on Saturday night.
The Ducks (2-0), who outrebounded the Pioneers 29-19, closed the game with an 18-5 run.
Catron's tip-in with 7:52 left gave Oregon the lead for good 52-51 as there were nine lead changes in the second half.
Brian Stafford scored 13 points in the first half for Denver, including a 3-pointer to start a 15-3 run which gave the Pioneers a 32-28 lead at halftime. He finished with 18 points and was 3-for-3 from 3-point range as the Pioneers were 8-of-14 from beyond the arc.
Malcolm Armstead scored 15 points, and E.J. Singler scored 11 for Oregon, while Andrew Hooper and Justin Coughlin scored 11 and 10 for Denver.
The BTI Invitational concludes on Sunday as Oregon plays Santa Barbara and Denver meets North Dakota State.
