Western Carolina ran its winning streak against the Big East to two games, holding on for a surprising 69-64 victory at DePaul on Tuesday night.
The Catamounts (1-1), who posted an upset of Louisville last season, pulled out to a 35-23 halftime lead against the Blue Demons, and they continued to extend that cushion into the second half with an 8-2 run over the first 2:45 of the second period. DePaul staged a furious rally in the closing minutes to get within five points, but could not complete the comeback effort before time ran out.
Harouna Mutombo led four Western Carolina players in double figures with 17 points. Mike Williams added 11 points, while Brandon Boggs and Richie Gordon finished with 10 points each. Brandon Young and Krys Faber scored 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the Blue Demons.
