Seton Hall's Jeremy Hazell had the final say in a matchup of standout senior guards, as he buried two free throws with 3 seconds remaining to lift the Pirates over Alabama, 83-78, in the 11th Annual Paradise Jam at the University of Virgin Islands.
Hazell finished with 25 points, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, for Seton Hall, which advances to play the winner between Iowa and Xavier on Sunday. Alabama, which got 20 points from its stellar senior Senario Hillman, will face the loser of the Iowa/Xavier game Saturday as the tourney continues.
The Crimson Tide (2-1) led by as many as nine in the first half en route to a 44-39 halftime advantage. Seton Hall (2-1) took control in the second half and built as big a lead as 12, at 67-55, on a Hazell 3-pointer. But 'Bama rallied and grabbed an 80-79 lead on Tony Mitchell's tip-in with 39 seconds left in a frenzied final two minutes.
Jeff Robinson added 16 points for the Pirates. Freshman Trevor Releford matched Hillman's 20 for the Tide.
It was the first meeting between the schools in a decade; Alabama won, 85-79, during the 2000-01 season.
