Cincinnati tamed its prehistoric opponents Saturday.
Yancy Gates and Sean Kilpatrick had 13 point apiece as the Bearcats (2-0) beat IPFW, 65-59, at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Both Gates and Kilpatrick shot 5-of-9 from the floor. Yates added seven rebounds and three assists, while Kilpatrick drained two 3-pointers in 25 minutes off the bench.
IPFW (1-2) pulled within 20-19 on Zach Plackemeier's 3-pointer midway through the first half, but Kilpatrick knocked down a shot from the arc among six points during a 15-7 run that provided a 35-26 lead with six minutes remaining in the half.
Cincinnati entered halftime leading 45-32, but IPFW opened the second half with a 15-6 run, getting two 3-pointers and a jumper from Ben Botts. Kilpatrick ended that run with a layup and pushed the edge to 60-51 on a 3-pointer with 5:25 left in the game.
Frank Gaines led the Mastodons with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
