D.J. Richardson's stingy defense and the all-around balanced play of Demetri McCamey forced the pace in Illinois's favor as it downed Yale 73-47 Tuesday night in Champaign, Ill.
The Bulldogs (1-3) came into the game against the No. 19 Illini already boasting an upset of a power conference foe, Boston College, and were able to dictate the tempo early. But Illinois (5-1) shook off a sluggish start and made Yale play a quicker tempo.
The result was Yale digging from a 30-17 halftime hole from which it could not recover. Bulldogs star guard Austin Morgan shot 30 percent from the floor as he faced heavy pressure from the Illini defense -- namely Richardson, a sophomore guard. Morgan finished with 12 points, well below his 18 points per game average.
Richardson scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while backcourt mate McCamey finished with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Center Mike Tisdale played an outstanding second half, flying around the court to finish with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The Illini is 4-0 at home.
