Noah Hartsock’s buzzer-beating jumper lifted Brigham Young to a 77-75 double-overtime victory over South Florida on Friday and put the Cougars into Saturday’s championship game of the South Padre Island Invitational at South Padre Island, Texas. Hartsock made just 3-of-11 shots but hit the decisive 12-footer after receiving a pass from Jimmer Fredette to help BYU improve to 5-0.
Fredette scored a game-high 32 points for the Cougars, who face either Saint Mary’s or Texas Tech in Saturday’s championship tilt. Jackson Emery added 20 points and hit five 3-point baskets for BYU. Augustus Gilchrist scored 14 points for South Florida (3-3).
The Bulls took a 61-58 lead with 44.6 seconds left in regulation time on a 3-pointer by Jawanza Poland. But BYU’s Charles Abouo forced overtime by hitting a 3-pointer with 31.1 seconds left.
South Florida took a four-point lead early in the first overtime but Fredette tied the score with a short jumper and then gave BYU a 69-66 lead with a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left.
Poland knotted the score at 69 with a 3 with 27.8 seconds left in the first overtime.
Poland scored 12 points and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
BYU won despite shooting just 31.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from the free-throw line. The Cougars were outrebounded 46-32.
