Bak Bak scored five straight points in the final minute and visiting California held on for a 76-73 victory over Iowa State on Saturday in a non-conference matchup.
Harper Kamp scored 14 points and Markhuri Sanders-Frison added 12 for the Golden Bears (5-2), who have won two straight.
Scott Christopherson hit a 3-pointer for the Cyclones (6-2) to tie the game, 69-69, with 50 seconds to play. Bak then got loose inside for a three-point play and then came up with a steal on the defensive end and was fouled. He converted both free throws to make it 74-69.
Iowa State cut it to 74-72 on a 3-pointer by freshman Melvin Ejim with 17 seconds to go, but Jorge Gutierrez made a pair of free throws for the Bears, and the Cyclones couldn’t hit a tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Christopherson scored 25 points and Jake Anderson added 16 for Iowa State, which has lost two straight.
