Andre Walker’s layup with 4 seconds left lifted Vanderbilt to a 77-76 victory over visiting Marquette on Wednesday night.
Marquette took a 76-75 lead with 19 seconds left in the see-saw affair on a jumper by Dwight Buycks.
Walker then converted off a fine entry pass to give the Commodores the lead, and Marquette never got off a potential game-winning shot as Darius Johnson-Odom lost the ball on the ensuing possession.
Jeffery Taylor led five Commodores in double figures with 19 points. Jimmy Butler led five Eagles in double figures with 15 points.
After trailing much of the first half, Marquette rallied to take a 37-34 lead into the break.
Vanderbilt responded in the second half. After the Golden Eagles took a 47-40 lead on a dunk by Chris Otule, the Commodores scored 12 straight points capped by Brad Tinsley’s jumper.
Vanderbilt (10-2) led 61-53 with nine minutes to play, but Marquette cut the deficit to one point several times before Buycks finally gave the Golden Eagles (9-4) the lead.
