Three Iowa State players combined for more than the entire opposition's output, with Jamie Vanderbeken's surprising 24 points leading the way in a 60-47 win over host Virginia. Vanderbeken came in averaging just 9.8 per game, but scored 13 of the team's 21 in the first half as Iowa State (12-2) took a 21-13 halftime cushion. Scott Christopherson had 14 points and Melvin Ejim 10 for the Cyclones, who have won six straight by an average of 22.3 points.
No player scored in double figures for Virginia (8-5) as its recent offensive struggles continued. The Cavaliers shot 6 for 30 (20 percent) and whiffed on all 13 of their 3-point tries in the first half. They finished 20 for 62 overall and 3 for 24 behind the arc.
Senior forward Will Sherrill provided a bright spot for Virginia – he returned to the starting lineup with nine rebounds and four points in 23 minutes, after missing five games with a fractured right fibula suffered in the Cavaliers' 87-79 upset over Minnesota on Nov. 29.
Since then, Virginia hasn't scored more than 63 points, and was coming off a 59-53 home loss to 5-10 Seattle on Dec. 22.
