After a nip-and-tuck first half, No. 5 Syracuse turned up the defensive intensity and pulled away for a 70-58 home win over No. 15 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.
Kris Joseph led the Orange (15-0, 2-0 Big East) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Scoop Jardine contributed 15 points and nine assists. Syracuse hit 15 of 27 field-goal attempts (55.6 percent) in the second half.
Notre Dame (12-2, 1-1) scored the first seven points after the intermission to take a 40-34 lead, but the Orange roared back with a 29-7 surge to pull out in front, 63-47, with 6:48 remaining. The Fighting Irish could get no closer than nine from there.
Tim Abromaitis scored 15 points for Notre Dame. Rick Jackson added 12 points and six blocked shots for Syracuse.
