West Virginia finally picked up a Big East Conference win, outlasting DePaul, 66-65, Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers (9-4, 1-2 Big East) lost their first two Big East games to surprising St. John’s and Marquette, and they had to hold on to edge the Blue Demons.
Casey Mitchell scored 18 points to lead West Virginia. He scored 13 in the first half to help the Mountaineers open a slim 34-31 lead.
Deniz Kilicli scored 14 points and Kevin Jones added 13 for West Virginia, which will play its third consecutive conference road game Saturday at No. 13 Georgetown.
Cleveland Melvin scored 17 points for DePaul (6-9, 0-3) which was playing its conference home opener.
Brandon Young had 12 points and Krys Faber added 10 for the Blue Demons, who had won three straight heading into conference play but have dropped three in a row since.
