No. 15 Kentucky rebounded from losing its Southeastern Conference opener, running out to a 13-2 lead and blowing past overmatched Auburn 78-54 on Tuesday night in Lexington, Ky.
Terrence Jones came off the bench to score a game-high 35 points, as the Wildcats (13-3, 1-1 SEC) bounced back after Georgia stopped their seven-game winning streak on Saturday.
Kentucky wasted no time in dispatching the Tigers (7-9, 0-2). Two Darius Miller 3-pointers in the first 3:20 sparked a 13-2 run. After a Kenny Gabriel basket for Auburn, the Wildcats scored 11 of the next 12 points, building a 24-5 advantage with 11:17 left in the first half. The Wildcats led 41-21 at halftime and pushed the lead to 48-23 three minutes into the second half on Jones’ jumper.
Against Georgia, the Wildcats gave up 44.9 percent shooting and shot 38 percent. Kentucky was much better against Auburn, holding the Tigers to 34.4 percent shooting from the field and shot 50.9 percent. Jones shot 11 of 17 from the field, including 4 of 5 on 3-pointers. Brandon Knight added 13 points and Darius Miller scored 10 points, helping Kentucky beat Auburn for the 12th consecutive time.
Allen Payne scored 15 points to lead Auburn. Gabriel added 13 points and Rob Chubb notched 10.
The Wildcats play host to LSU on Saturday, before playing four of their next five on the road. Auburn plays Sunday at Mississippi State.
