Malcolm White led four players in double figures with 13 points and LSU held on for a 56-53 home victory over SEC foe Arkansas on Wednesday.
Garrett Green had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (10-7, 2-0 SEC), who improved to 2-0 in the SEC for the first time since 2006 despite the absence of leading scorer Ralston Turner. Turner missed a second straight game with a stress reaction in his foot.
The Tigers had to sweat it out, however, squandering nearly all of a 17-point lead.
Arkansas (11-4, 1-1) trailed 41-24 early in the second half, but used a 22-8 run to climb back into the game.
The Tigers held Arkansas at bay by hitting their free throws in the final two minutes, but Green gave the Razorbacks life when he missed two free throws with 20 seconds left. Arkansas quickly cut the lead to 55-53 on a layup by Marshawn Powell with 11 seconds remaining.
But after Eddie Ludwig spilt a pair of free throws, Jeff Peterson launched a harried 3-pointer that resulted in an air ball with 1.3 seconds to play, and LSU hung on.
Powell had 15 points and six rebounds for the Razorbacks, who couldn’t overcome a first half in which they shot 18 percent (5 of 27).
