Vincent Council led the way with 16 points, eight assists and eight rebounds as Providence knocked off its second ranked opponent in a row with an 83-68 victory over No. 7 Villanova on Wednesday.
Marshon Brooks hit 12 of 14 free throws to finish with 20 points and Gerald Coleman added 16 for Providence (13-8, 2-6 Big East), which took down Louisville on Saturday for its first conference victory.
Brooks shot 2 of 10 in the first half but the Friars were still able to take a 34-25 edge into the break thanks to the struggles of Villanova’s stars, as Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes combined to shoot 0 of 13 in the first half.
Providence would not let the Wildcats pull any closer than seven points in the second half, pushing it to as much as 74-56 when Bryce Cotton knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:57 left.
Villanova (17-3, 5-2) finished shooting 32.5 percent (22 of 77) from the floor, including 4 of 22 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats, still hopeful of grabbing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, get their next three at home with Georgetown, Marquette and West Virginia up next.
