Trailing by as much as 19 points in the second half Saturday, Auburn rallied at home to win just its second SEC game of the season, stunning Mississippi State 65-62.
Earnest Ross scored 21 points to lead Auburn (9-15, 2-8 SEC), which had lost eight of its past nine games. Dee Bost led Mississippi State (13-11, 5-5 SEC) with 22 points.
The Bulldogs led 53-35 with less than nine minutes left, but Auburn used a 27-5 run to fight back. Kenny Gabriel’s steal and slam dunk brought the Tigers within 58-54 with less than four minutes left.
Auburn’s Chris Denson’s steal and layup made it 58-56 and Gabriel then drained a 3-pointer from the right corner with 1:18 to go for a 59-58 lead. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession, and Josh Wallace’s three-point play with 26 seconds left made it 62-58.
Bost twice brought the Bulldogs within two points in the final seconds, but Gabriel and Ross combined to hit three free throws.
