Dwight Hardy’s twisting layup with 1.2 seconds left gave host St. John’s a 60-59 upset over No. 4 Pittsburgh Saturday.
Hardy finished with a team-high 19 points and Justin Burrell had 15 points and eight rebounds for St. John’s (17-9, 9-5 Big East), which has won four straight. D.J. Kennedy added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Red Storm, who have beaten five of six ranked teams at Madison Square Garden.
Travon Woodall’s 3-pointer with 11.3 seconds left had given Pittsburgh a 59-58 lead, before Hardy snuck along the baseline and flipped the game-winner in over his head to cap a back-and-forth Big East thriller.
Ashton Gibbs, who missed the last three games with a knee injury, made 6 of 9 from 3-point range and finished with a career-high 26 points to lead the Panthers (24-3, 12-2).
Pittsburgh's lead in the Big East remained at 1 1/2 games over Notre Dame when the Irish fell to West Virginia on Saturday. The Panthers had a five-game win streak broken.
St. John’s led Pittsburgh by as many as nine in the first half, but made only one of its last eight field-goal attempts. Gibbs scored 15 points as the Panthers came back to take a 27-26 halftime lead.
Gibbs had the last seven points of the half, four on free throws after technical fouls on St. John’s coach Steve Lavin and Kennedy. Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon was also called for a technical in the first half.
