Despite allowing Marshon Brooks to set a Big East record with 52 points, No. 9 Notre Dame was able to hold on for a 94-93 victory at Providence on Wednesday evening.
The Fighting Irish (22-5, 11-4 Big East) took an early 21-10 lead and held a double-digit cushion for much of the night, but Brooks — who scored 35 points in the second half alone — rallied the Friars back, cutting the margin to one on a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining.
Providence (14-14, 3-12), which committed only four turnovers, had a chance to steal the win when Notre Dame's Tim Abromaitis missed a pair of free throws, but Brooks' shot from beyond halfcourt was well off the mark.
Ben Hansbrough finished with 32 points to lead the Fighting Irish, while Abromaitis added 28. Brooks hit 20-of-28 field-goal attempts for the Friars, including 6 of 10 from both the line and 3-point range. He also added five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
