Freshman Tristan Thompson recorded his seventh double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds and No. 8 Texas turned away host Baylor’s upset bid with a 60-54 victory on Saturday.
LaceDarius Dunn scored 22 points for Baylor and became the all-time leading scorer in the Big 12 with 2,273 points. Texas Tech's Andre Emmett held the old mark with 2,256 points.
Gary Johnson scored 15 points and Jordan Hamilton added 14 for the Longhorns (25-6, 13-3 Big 12), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Johnson and Hamilton combined for 17 rebounds as the Longhorns won the battle of the boards 42-26.
Dunn’s 3-pointer with two minutes remaining pulled Baylor (18-12, 7-9) to within two 54-52, but Cory Joseph answered with a layup and the Longhorns iced it with four free throws.
Perry Jones had nine points and 11 rebounds for Baylor (18-12, 7-9).
Texas enters the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 2 seed after Kansas wrapped up its seventh straight conference title with Saturday’s 70-66 win at Missouri. The Longhorns open tournament play Thursday against the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Baylor and Oklahoma.
