Tanner Smith was clutch at the foul line, enabling Clemson to escape with a 64-58 overtime victory over Seton Hall in the consolation finals of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam Monday in St. Thomas.
Smith sank six free throws in the final 23 seconds to help the Tigers (4-1) to end the tournament on a high note. It was their second tight game in as many days, coming on the heels of a 61-60 loss to Old Dominion in Sunday’s winners bracket semifinal.
The Tigers jumped out to a 10-2 lead and coasted to a 26-19 halftime margin, but Seton Hall (2-3) battled back. The lead changed hands six times in the final five minutes of regulation. A free throw by Clemson's Devin Booker with three seconds to go forced overtime.
Clemson overcame 29.3 percent shooting from the field (17-for-58). Demontez Stitt led the way with 15 points and six rebounds. Booker (14 points) and Smith (10 points) also scored in double figures.
Jeff Robinson scored 16 points for Seton Hall.
