Kemba Walker scored 29 points, and Connecticut capped an impressive run through the EA Sports Maui Invitational with an 84-67 victory over No. 9 Kentucky in the final on Wednesday.
Named the tournament’s most outstanding player, Walker fell just short of reaching the 30-point mark in his fourth straight game. Walker, who scored 17 in a dominant first half, was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Alex Oriakhi, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds against Kentucky.
The Wildcats (4-1) received another big game from freshman Terrence Jones, who scored a team-high 24 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Darius Miller was the only other Kentucky player in double digits with 15 points.
Connecticut (5-0) closed the first half with a 21-2 run to lead 50-29. The Huskies shot 18 of 29 (62.1 percent) in the first half.
Jones scored Kentucky’s first 10 points, but the Wildcats struggled after he went to the bench with two fouls with 8:59 remaining in the half. Point guard Brandon Knight, who scored 24 points in Tuesday’s win over No. 11 Washington, was 3 for 16 from the field, and finished with six points against Connecticut.
UConn, which last captured the Maui Invitational title in 2005, finished 18-16 last season and returned only two starters. Picked to finish 10th in the Big East preseason coaches’ poll, the Huskies made a huge impression in Maui, and will likely enter the next coaches' poll.
