Kemba Walker drained a jumper from the top of the key as time expired to lift Connecticut to a 76-74 victory over top-seeded Pittsburgh on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.
Walker finished with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists and Jeremy Lamb scored 17 for the ninth-seeded Huskies (24-9), who have won three games in three days and will face either St. John’s or Syracuse on Friday in the semifinals.
Knotted at 74-74 in the final seconds, Connecticut got the ball to Walker and used a high ball screen to get a mismatch with Panthers center Gary McGhee guarding the much-quicker Walker. The All-Big East performer took one hard dribble and then stepped back and knocked down a fall-away jumper for the win.
Pittsburgh led by as much as 12 points in the first half and controlled most of the second but could not pull away.
Alex Oriakhi converted a layup with 1:02 left to give the Huskies their biggest lead at 74-71, but Ashton Gibbs tied it with his sixth 3-pointer at the 49-second mark.
Gibbs finished with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting for the Panthers (27-5).
