TULSA, Okla. -- Markieff Morris led the way with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 12 rebounds while twin brother Marcus added 17 points and 13 boards as No. 1 seed Kansas advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament with a 73-59 victory over Illinois on Sunday.
Tyshawn Taylor chipped in 13 points and four assists for the Jayhawks (34-2), who will face No. 12 seed Richmond on Friday in the Southwest Regional semifinals in San Antonio.
The ninth-seeded Fighting Illini (20-14) looked poised for the upset, hanging within five points, 56-51, with less than six minutes left and responding every time Kansas attempted to pull away.
But Markieff Morris took over from there, scoring six straight points to spark a 16-4 run over the next five minutes.
The Jayhawks exercised the demons of last spring, when they were knocked out of the NCAA tournament by lightly-regarded Northern Iowa in the second round.
Mike Tisdale recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Mike Davis scored 17 points for Illinois, which has not advanced past the round of 32 since making a run to the National Championship game in 2005.
