SAN ANTONIO -- Bradford Burgess hit the game-winning layup off an inbounds play with seven seconds left in overtime and finished with 26 points as No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history with a 72-71 overtime victory over Florida State on Friday in the Southwest Region semifinals.
Brandon Rozzell scored all 16 of his points after the half, Jamie Skeen added 11 and Joey Rodriguez added 10 assists for the Rams (27-11), who will face No. 1 seed Kansas on Sunday in the regional final.
VCU was one of the final two at-large teams added to the field and needed to win an opening round game just to make the field of 64.
The 10th-seeded Seminoles (23-11) grabbed a 71-70 lead in overtime on a driving dunk by Chris Singleton with 30 seconds left before the Rams called a timeout to design the final play. Burgess curled off a screen, caught the inbounds pass right under the basket on the left side and put it in.
The schools went back and forth in the second half until the Rams used a 9-0 run to grab a 57-49 advantage with 10:16 left. The Seminoles would turn it up on defense down the stretch, holding VCU to one field goal over the final 7:54.
Florida State finally got all the way back, tying it at 65-65 with 46 seconds left when Singleton buried a 3-pointer from the right wing.
Derwin Kitchen scored 23 points and Singleton added 16 off the bench for FSU.
