Georgetown's freshman class could be headed for a nice campaign, but against Savannah State, the veterans led the way. Senior Henry Sims scored 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and junior Hollis Thompson added 13 as Georgetown cruised to a 83-54 victory in the season opener for both schools.
Georgetown led 32-29 a minute into the second half, then used a 20-2 spurt to pull away from the visiting Tigers.
The freshmen, expected to contribute immediately to a team that lost its top two scorers and was picked to finish 10th in the Big East, did make contributions. Otto Porter scored nine points and Greg Whittington hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half.
Savannah State struggled shooting the ball. The Tigers, in their first season in the MEAC Conference after nine years as an independent, made just 20 of 55 shots.
The Tigers were 8 of 26 in the first half. Despite a 3-pointer from Deric Rudolph at the buzzer, the Hoyas led 32-24 at the break. Rudolph made another three-pointer and Arnold Louis hit a layup to start the second half, but the Hoyas ran off 20 of the next 22 points.
Rudolph led Savannah State with 12 points.
