Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16 points as No. 17 Michigan overcame a sluggish start to beat visiting Western Illinois 59-55.
Hardaway hit 3 of 6 from beyond the arc to key a second-half surge. When freshman point guard Trey Burke fed Hardaway for a trey with 5:10 left, Michigan led 51-42.
The Leathernecks (0-2) hit 10 of 18 first-half shots and went to the break tied 28-28, but their upset bid disintegrated in a cold-shooting second half.
Senior guard Ceola Clark III led Western Illinois with 21 points and four assists.
Burke, trying to replace NBA draft pick Darius Morris, had 14 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Wolverines (3-0).
Michigan had to work a lot harder than it did on Monday, when it jumped out to a 21-0 lead over Towson.
