Herb Pope capped an 8-2 run with a layup early in the second half to give Seton Hall a lead it never relinquished and the Pirates beat St. Peter’s 63-54 Saturday for their 16th straight win over the rival Peacocks.
Pope finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds as Seton Hall, which trailed by as much as seven in the first half, built a 10-point lead with three minutes to play at the Prudential Center. St. Peter’s never got closer than six points the rest of the way losing its second straight game.
Along with Pope, three other Pirate starters scored in double figures. Fuquan Edwin had 14 points and Jordan Theodore had 13 points and 10 assists. Patrik Auda had 12 points.
The Peacocks (1-4) led virtually the entire first half. Seton Hall (5-1) scored five straight points late in the first half to take a short-lived 27-26 lead. Darius Conley tipped in a missed jumper by Yvon Raymond to give St. Peter’s a 28-27 lead at the half.
Chris Prescott led St. Peter’s with 14 points and Karee Ferguson added 12 points off the bench.
