UCLA’s twin towers - Travis and David Wear - combined for 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bruins to a 71-63 victory over Richmond at the L.A. Sports Arena on Friday.
Four Bruins scored in double figures as UCLA went on a 10-0 run late in the first half, scored the first seven points of the second half and never trailed again. In what was the last game before Pac-12 Conference play begins, the Bruins (7-5) won for their fifth straight time but it wasn't easy.
Richmond (7-6) led by nine points in the first half but UCLA opened up a 52-43 lead with seven minutes to play on consecutive dunks by Josh Smith and Lazeric Jones which followed a long 3-pointer by Richmond’s Darien Brothers.
The Spiders closed the gap to four points late in the contest but could get no closer. Brothers, who scored 38 points in Richmond’s last game, led the Spiders with 25 points.
Jones led UCLA with 16 points and Travis Wear had 14. David Wear scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The teams were tied at 24 at the break. Richmond started the game 6-for-10 from the floor but hit only six of their next 32 shots.
