Jaquon Parker scored a career-high 21 points as visiting Cincinnati downed No. 22 Pittsburgh 66-63 Sunday.
Sean Kilpatrick drained five 3-pointers en route to a 19-point effort for the shorthanded Bearcats (11-3, 1-0 Big East), who won in Pittsburgh for the first time since Jan. 10, 1979.
Travon Woodall played sparingly again for the Panthers (11-4, 0-2) after he logged just 18 minutes in Tuesday’s loss to Notre Dame following a six-game absence due to groin and abdominal injuries.
Meanwhile, Yancy Gates, Cheikh Mbodj and Octavius Ellis all sat out for Cincinnati as the trio completed their six-game suspensions for their roles in the on-court fight during the Bearcats’ Dec. 10 loss to Xavier.
Cincinnati took the lead for good at 53-50 midway through the second half on a 3-pointer by Cashmere Wright.
Despite their inability to stretch the margin out past seven points, the Bearcats scored 20 points off 17 Pittsburgh turnovers, allowing them to maintain their advantage over the final 10:20.
John Johnson hit two free throws to trim the Panthers’ deficit to 66-63 with 41 seconds remaining, but he was called for an offensive foul on the next possession after Parker missed the front end of a 1-and-1.
Cincinnati, which went scoreless over the final 3:05, then forced a pair of missed 3-point attempts by Pittsburgh in the final seconds to hold on for the win.
Nasir Robinson finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers, who have dropped three consecutive games for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
