Arnett Moultrie had 28 points and 12 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season and No. 16 Mississippi State held on down the stretch for a 76-71 victory over visiting LSU on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (17-4, 4-2 SEC) won for the fourth time in five games, setting up a big matchup Saturday at No. 13 Florida. Wednesday’s victory pushes the Bulldogs into a virtual tie with the Gators for third place in the SEC, two games behind conference leader and top-ranked Kentucky.
Down 11 points with 4:45 to go, the Tigers (12-8, 2-4) rallied to within 68-65 with 1:03 remaining after back-to-back 3-pointers by Anthony Hickey. After two Dee Bost free throws, Ralston Turner’s 3-pointer with 28 seconds left brought the Tigers within 70-68.
Trailing 72-68, Hickey hit another 3-pointer to cut LSU’s deficit to 72-71 with 18 seconds left. Mississippi State’s Jalen Steele hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to make it 74-71.
Steele scored 15 points off the bench. Bost finished with 10 assists.
Andre Stringer led the Tigers with 17 points. Hickey finished with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
