Carrick Felix enjoyed one of his best games of the season Saturday with 20 points as Arizona State posted a much-needed 71-67 victory over visiting Washington State.
Chris Colvin added 16 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Sun Devils (7-14, 3-6 Pac-12), who won their first game in four tries without leading scorer and rebounder Trent Lockett and overcame a dominating 34-point effort from the Cougars’ Brock Motum.
Arizona State, which had struggled a bit behind the arc while dropping three straight conference games, hit four straight 3-pointers in as many possessions as the Sun Devils led by as many as 10 points in the first half.
Washington State (11-10, 3-6), playing its first full game without second-leading scorer Faisal Aden, trimmed the lead to 37-36 by halftime. But sophomore center Jordan Bachynski and Colvin combined to score the first 11 points of the second half to give Arizona State a 48-40 advantage with 14:52 remaining.
Although the Sun Devils never pushed their lead past that eight-point cushion, the Cougars could get not get closer than three points the rest of the way as Arizona State withstood a couple of desperation 3-pointers in the final minutes.
The Sun Devils finished 7 of 15 from 3-point range, helping to overcome their 17 turnovers.
Motum was 13 for 18 from the floor and added eight rebounds for the Cougars, who fell to 0-5 on the road in conference play.
