Tony Mitchell scored 26 points and JaMychal Green had a stellar all-around game as No. 15 Alabama defeated Wichita State 70-60 in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Friday.
Green had 15 points, 12 rebounds and blocked four shots as the Crimson Tide (4-0) move on to face Purdue in Sunday’s final.
Toure’ Murry scored 21 points for Wichita State (2-1), which defeated Alabama in last season’s NIT championship game.
The Crimson Tide blocked 14 shots with Nick Jacobs rejecting five and Mitchell three to go with eight rebounds. Trevor Releford scored 15 points, hitting 11 of 12 free throws.
Alabama never trailed after Green scored five straight points for a 43-38 advantage with 14:56 to play. Mitchell followed with a layup and Trevor Lacey hit a jumper to culminate a 9-1 run that gave Alabama an eight-point lead.
Two free throws by Releford made it 51-41 with 9:42 left. The Shockers rallied to within 53-49 on Murry’s basket and free throw with 7:59 to play.
The Crimson Tide responded with eight straight points with Mitchell’s hoop making it 61-49 with 3:12 remaining.
Ben Smith scored 16 points and Joe Ragland tallied 14 for Wichita State.
Mitchell had 12 points in the first half as Alabama led 31-28 at intermission.
