Glen Rice Jr. scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half in his return from a suspension to lead Georgia Tech to a 73-60 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in the consolation bracket of the Charleston Classic on Friday.
Rice scored eight consecutive points during a 13-0 second-half run that helped the Yellow Jackets (3-1) overcome a seven-point deficit while handing the Rams (1-2) their second consecutive defeat.
Rice, who had eight rebounds, missed the first three games because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Brandon Reed added 13 points for Georgia Tech.
Bradford Burgess scored 17 points and Troy Daniels added 13 for VCU, which shot only 32.1 percent.
Georgia Tech shot 61.3 percent in the second half and scored 50 points after committing 13 first-half turnovers and being outhustled by the Rams, who made a surprise run to the Final Four last season.
Rice hit two 3-pointers and a layup in the go-ahead run that gave Georgia Tech a 44-38 lead. Reed’s three-point play with 6:29 left boosted the lead to 58-47.
VCU never trailed by less than seven the rest of the way.
Georgia Tech trailed 26-14 after Burgess hit a 3-pointer with 5:24 left in the first half. Burgess hit another 3 in the final minute to help the Rams take a 31-23 halftime advantage.
Juvonte Reddic’s layup gave VCU a 38-31 with 14:29 left before the Yellow Jackets took over.
