No. 15 Alabama used balanced scoring and stifling defense to beat Purdue 65-56 for the championship of the 5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Trevor Releford scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures for the Crimson Tide (5-0), which avenged a 66-47 loss to the Boilermakers (4-1) last December.
The Crimson Tide broke open a close game in the final 12 minutes. Tied at 33-33, Alabama went on a 21-7 run to lead 54-40 on Tony Mitchell’s 3-pointer with 4:55 remaining. Mitchell finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Purdue came in averaging 84.8 points per game. But the Boilermakers scored just 23 points in the first half.
Alabama scored the game’s first 11 points and led by 10 midway through the first half. Purdue crawled within 24-23 at halftime, and led briefly in the early moments of the second half.
Robbie Hummel finished with 17 points to lead Purdue.
