Redblacks 35, Tiger-Cats 31: Trevor Harris threw for 341 yards and a touchdown as Ottawa erased a double-digit deficit against visiting Hamilton to take sole possession of first place in the East Division.
Harris completed 24-of-32 passes, including a touchdown toss to Diontae Spencer, while short-yardage specialist Dominique Davis rushed for three scores as the Redblacks (9-7) avoided a third consecutive loss. R.J. Harris made five catches for 128 yards and Brad Sinopoli finished with eight receptions for 113 yards for Ottawa, which can clinch the division title with a win over its final two games.
Jeremiah Masoli was 23-of-34 for 342 yards and three touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats (8-8), who committed 12 penalties for 128 yards. Brandon Banks hauled in eight passes for 133 yards and a score before suffering a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter while Luke Tasker had seven receptions for 60 yards and a pair of TDs for Hamilton, which will host Ottawa next week.
Masoli threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Tasker to open the scoring before Lewis Ward booted 23- and 52-yard field goals to pull Ottawa within 7-6. Masoli fired scoring strikes to Banks (33 yards) and Tasker (2) to stretch Hamilton's lead to 16 points before Davis scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, but Lirim Hajrullahu converted a 21-yard attempt with four seconds left in the second quarter to give the Tiger-Cats a 25-14 halftime advantage.
Davis rushed for another 1-yard touchdown to pull Ottawa within three and Spencer made an acrobatic 10-yard TD catch, which gave the Redblacks their first lead at 29-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Hajrullahu drilled a career-best 53 yard field goal to put Hamilton on top before Davis ran for his third score to give Ottawa a 35-31 lead with 7:07 remaining, and the Redblacks' defence shut the door the rest of the way to move into the driver's seat in the race for the division title.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tasker has caught six touchdown passes in his last three games. …. Ward set a new pro football record for consecutive field goals with his 52-yarder in the first quarter, eclipsing the previous mark of 44 straight by Adam Vinatieri of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. … Sinopoli needs four catches to break Ben Cahoon's (112) single-season record for most by a Canadian. … Ottawa RB William Powell rushed for a game-high 87 yards on 21 carries.
