Roughriders 17, Alouettes 10: Earl Okine and Charleston Hughes each returned a fumble for a touchdown as visiting Saskatchewan beat Montreal to extend its winning streak to four games in the first weather-shortened contest in regular-season history.
Cody Fajardo completed 15-of-21 passes for 166 yards and added another 48 yards on the ground for the Roughriders (5-3), who moved within two points of first place in the West Division. Kyran Moore caught three passes for a team-high 50 yards and Saskatchewan's defence held Montreal without a touchdown on offence before the game was called with 2:41 left in the third quarter due to lightning strikes in the area.
Antonio Pipkin was 4-of-7 for 47 yards before pulling himself out the game due to discomfort as the Alouettes (3-4) fell to their second straight loss after winning their previous three games. Matt Shiltz finished 5-of-8 for 43 yards in relief and Shakeir Ryan scored a special-teams touchdown for Montreal.
Ryan brought the home crowd to its feet after returning a punt 101 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring, but Boris Bede missed the extra point and Montreal had to be content with a 6-0 lead. Derrick Moncrief jarred the ball from Pipkin with a huge hit and Okine scooped it up before racing 55 yards for a TD to put Saskatchewan on top.
Gabriel Ferraro (28 yards) and Bede (43) traded field goals before Hughes returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown to give the Roughriders a 16-10 advantage heading into the halftime break. Jon Ryan's punt single with 9:16 left in the third quarter was the last scoring play of game thanks to a new weather protocol, which states that any delay past the midway point of the third quarter lasting over 60 minutes would result in a victory for the team leading at the time of the stoppage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Saskatchewan has given up four kick-return touchdowns in 2019. … Montreal was without starting QB Vernon Adams Jr. (concussion) and leading RB William Stanback (lower body). … Roughriders WR Manny Arceneaux extended his streak of games with at least one reception to 105 in a row. … Alouettes RB Jeremiah Johnson accounted for 62 yards in his first start of the season.
