Eskimos 19, Lions 6: Greg Ellingson hauled in six passes for 133 yards to go over 1,000 for the fifth consecutive season as Edmonton turned back visiting BC to clinch a playoff spot.
Logan Kilgore completed 18-of-29 passes for 194 yards and the Eskimos' defense came up big to end the team's three-game home losing streak while finishing a sweep of the season series. Shaq Cooper ran for 94 yards and the game's only touchdown as Edmonton (8-8) controlled the Lions before and after quarterback Mike Reilly left with a broken left wrist in the first quarter.
Danny O'Brien was 12-of-23 for 103 yards in relief of former Edmonton star Reilly (1-of-3, six yards) as BC had its four-game winning streak halted - as well as its faint playoff chances. John White finished with 104 yards from scrimmage for the Lions (5-11) while Bryan Burnham, the CFL's leading receiver, was held to a pair of catches for 29 yards after recording at least seven receptions in each of his previous five games.
Sean Whyte's 22-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the first quarter, but the Eskimos extended the lead to 10-0 on the second play of the second as Cooper ran 2 yards for a touchdown. Sergio Castillo went 1-for-2 on field-goal attempts, making a 20-yarder and missing from 54, while Whyte converted both his tries (49, 44 yards) as Edmonton increased its advantage to 16-3 at intermission.
The Lions gave themselves a chance late in the third quarter with a goal-line stand and moved down the field to set up Castillo's 46-yard kick on the first play of the fourth, trimming their deficit to 10 points. But BC could not get anything going on its final four possessions and a late interception by Tyquwan Glass led to Whyte's 21-yard field goal with 11 seconds left that capped the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ellingson (1,094 receiving yards) also extended his streak of games with at least one catch to 60. … BC LB Kevin Haynes finished with a career-high 11 tackles. … Edmonton WR Ricky Collins Jr. also made it to 1,000 receiving yards (1,004) for the first time in his career by registering 26 on four receptions. … Whyte has converted 24 consecutive field-goal attempts. … The Eskimos were without starting RB C.J. Gable (knee), who is three yards shy of back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. … The Lions had outscored their opponents 149-43 during their four-game winning streak.
