Justin Abdelkader scored a shorthanded goal with 7:10 remaining in the third period, providing the go-ahead goal to help lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the visiting New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Fourteen seconds into their fourth power play, the Devils made a costly turnover and Detroit capitalized.

Brian Boyle won a faceoff from Luke Glendening near the half boards to the right of Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard. Boyle whipped the puck to Will Butcher near center ice but Glendening recovered from the faceoff loss and intercepted the pass intended for Taylor Hall.

Glendening was joined by Abdelkader on a 2-on-1 and the play finished when Abdelkader put the rebound by Cory Schneider into the right side of the net.

It was Abdelkader's first career shorthanded goal in his 632nd career game. It lifted the Red Wings to their third straight win and fourth in six games after a season-opening, seven-game losing streak.

Detroit scored all of its goals on special teams as Martin Frk and Michael Rasmussen tallied on the power play.

Trevor Daley sealed it with an empty-net, shorthanded goal with 42.8 seconds left and it turned out to be the game-winner when New Jersey's Marcus Johansson scored with four seconds left.

Blake Coleman scored and defenseman Sami Vatanen tallied on the power play for the Devils, who lost for the fifth time in six games (1-4-1) after opening the season with a four-game winning streak.

Jimmy Howard made 25 saves, including a point-blank stop on Kyle Palmieri's one-timer with 68 seconds left after the Devils pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker.

Schneider made 27 saves in his first start of the season as the Devils dropped to 0-2 on a season-high seven-game road trip.

Frk made it 1-0 with 12:06 left by ripping a one-timer from the left circle by Schneider and the lead stood until Coleman converted Travis Zajac's feed from behind the net with about six minutes left in the second.

Vatanen made it 2-1 3:20 into the third by putting a wrist shot from the left circle by Howard, but 10 seconds later he was penalized for interference and Rasmussen chipped in his own rebound at 4:59 of the third to forge a 2-2 tie.
