Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 1:38 of overtime as the visiting Buffalo Sabres came back to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 6-5 on Thursday night.

Ristolainen scored his second goal of the season on a shot from the top of the right circle on a breakout after the Canadiens missed the net on a three-on-one chance.

Vladimir Sobotka and Jeff Skinner each scored twice for Buffalo, and Conor Sheary scored once.

Evan Rodrigues, Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel each had two assists for Buffalo.

Jonathan Drouin, Matthew Peca, Andrew Shaw, Tomas Tatar and Nicolas Deslauriers scored for Montreal. Max Domi had three assists.

Buffalo's Linus Ullmark allowed five goals on 32 shots in the first two periods before Carter Hutton replaced him for the third and handled all five shots in the third period and overtime.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price made 25 saves.

Each team scored three first-period goals after the Canadiens failed to score with a two-man advantage for 1:14 early in the game.

After killing the penalties, the Sabres scored at 6:08 with Sobotka sliding the puck past Price on a superb setup by Rodrigues. Reinhart also assisted.

Drouin scored his fifth of the season from the edge of the crease at 9:14 on Domi's pass.

Sobotka tapped in a rebound at 14:40, assisted by Rodrigues and Reinhart, for his third of the season.

Montreal tied it 10 seconds later when Peca swept the puck in off Ullmark's leg from the side of the net for his first of the season.

Sheary tapped in his sixth of the season from the slot to restore Buffalo's lead at 15:52. Shaw tied it with his second goal of the season 34 seconds later.

Buffalo took a 4-3 lead at 5:34 of the second period when Skinner collected his first goal of the game from the right circle after Eichel hit the post.

Montreal tied it on Tatar's sixth of the season at 10:17 of the second on Domi's smart feed.

Montreal led 5-4 at 18:03 on the first goal of the season by Deslauriers, a short-handed effort after Peca's takeaway.

Skinner's 11th goal of the season on Eichel's pass from a faceoff tied the game at 2:20 of the third period.
